This is an AR game in which you have to collect our specially designed cards with different trademarks and scan them with this app. You will see the “blind box” first, open the box and you will see the object and information you got that is attached with the card. You can collect the objects in a certain series and check your collection display by scanning the special trademark designed for one topic.

︎Background

The concept of our game comes from childhood memories of featured Chinese snacks. For Chinese people born after the 1990s, there are some popular snacks that we all love when we were young and are still very popular nowadays. They are popular not only because of their flavors, but also the classic packages and the culture behind them that have become a significant representation for the 90s and childhood memory for our generation. The snacks in the pictures are Wangzai Milk, Xiaoxuesheng ice cream, Latiao, and Wangzai QQ candy. These are some great examples of the snacks from the 90s.

︎Brand Culture
Some of the snacks, along with their brands and special package design have even become a cultural mark of China. The White Rabbit Creamy Candy is a very good example. The White Rabbit has been kept its flavor and appearance in the past decades since it's been created. But it is still a popular snack even today. The white rabbit has become a cultural representation of China like it has been used in many games and movie scenes as a signal of Chinese style. The brand appearance has became an icon for cultural identity. The visual graphic style and the brand becomes a logo to represent Chinese culture.

︎Design Concept.

Based on the background, we decided to make a game that records, or remanence these memories. We wanted to create a game that has the "special Chinese flavor" for our generation and using the snacks that directly carry our memories and feelings to childhood time is a very nice starting point.

The next thing we consider is the inner logic of how to play this game. Since we decided to build an AR game from the start, we tried to make a connection between presenting our concept and exploring this relatively new technology. The blind box idea came to our minds.
︎Blind Box Culture
The blind box is a form of marketing products and is also one of the most profitable and popular business model in China. A company called Pop Mart has started using the blind box idea as a basic logic to create series of cute physical model toys and sell them to people. The customers can only buy these boxes without knowing what's the actual model inside. To collect a whole series, they have to keep buying until they get all of them. There is a really high chance of getting multiple same models, and the customers have to exchange or re-sale them to get other ones. Pop Mart's products have become the most popular ones in the toy industry due to this form of the blind box shopping and their cute-looking designs. Young people are the major shopping powers. This interesting idea has caught our attention, and we believe it would be a nice form to apply a similar idea to our own game: blind box AR snacks

︎Our Project

We launched our project based on the former research on the background and blind box. In this project, we are trying to use AR as a new way to conduct  a design of ‘’digital blind box.”
︎Game Process
This is the game process of the final product. The player first get the blind box and open it to get the special designed card, then they can scan the marker on the card to reveal the blind-boxed item.

︎Card and Marker Design

Card Design

Marker Design and Corresponding objects

By scanning different marks on the card, a blind box would show up on the card. The players can open the box to check what exact snack they get, with the relative video and audio resources showing on the card together. The text information about the snack would also be there so the players can read about the snack they got.

︎Future Step

This project is still ongoing. We now have a list of the snacks that we plan to incorporate in this game's first memory series, and we are planning to create more and keep adding more details to this project. We want to make it a complete collection with diffrent series of digital blind box.
